Blox

Power walking food! The idea behind these was to create a filling high energy food for taking walking. We needed something that was easy to make, did not taste too bad, would not disintegrate given adverse weather (hot, cold or wet) and a bit of rough handling in a rucksack pocket. Blox - almost like dwarf bread, but not quite.

Ingredients:

Instructions:

Melt the margarine in a very large saucepan (or wok, or pressure cooker base) over a moderate heat. Once molten, add the sugar and syrup and stir until warmed through. Remove from the heat and add the remaining ingredients. Stir until the oats are evenly coated in the margarine/sugar mixture. (Alternatively if you do not have a large enough saucepan for all of the oats you can mix the oats and warmed margarine/sugar mixture in a mixing bowl, it just means one more item of washing up!).

Turn the mixture out into a greased 10"x7" baking tray. Press down firmly into the tray until evenly distributed (the back of a spoon works well for this). Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C/350°F/Gas Mk4 for 30-40mins, depending on how well done you like them. Once removed from the oven it is essential to press the blox down again with the back of a spoon whilst they are still hot. This ensures that the blox are solid enough to survive a day out! Cut into the required size when cool (I suggest two rows of six - this size seems to be as much as anyone can handle in one go.
